Nantes is the biggest city of Brittany, installed to the confluence of the Sèvre and the Erdre, where fluvial the Loire becomes maritime, breach by the high tide flow. From time, islands, populated since 17th century, have facilitated there the creation of bridges channeling the trade between the basse - bretagne and the poitou and the emergence of a big city. The histoiry of Nantes

NANTES, primitive city of Namnètes on the 1st of century, Gallic then roman, first know for bloody struggles between Norman invaders and peoples of Armorique.

During wars of religion, the Duke of Mercoeur, governor of Nantes, fought Henri IV that could enter only in 1598 in the city where it signed the famous Edict of Nantes that granted to Protestants the liberty of cult.
In the beginning of the XVIII century, the boom of the port, then the first of France, insured in Nantes, counter of the Company of India, an extraordinary prosperity. It is the period of slave traders, it is also the period illustrated by the bold corsairs Nantes whose most famous was Jacques CASSARD.
1789, during the revolution, Nantes resisted with energy to attack of the natives of the Vendée. In 1793, it was one of the City that most suffers the of the terror. CARRIER came to make there reign the guillotine and to organize the horrible drowings.
In 1793, the natives of Vendée having wanted to seize Nantes, were victoriously repelled
by CANCLAUX, CATHELINEAU was killed during this attack.
CHARRETTE was executed in Nantes in 1796. During the war of 1914-1918, Nantes was an important supply center for the English army first, then for the American army.
1940-1944, during the occupation, Nantes had to suffer bombings whose most severe were these of 16 and 23 September 1943. The City of Nantes was the first of France to receive the Cross of the Liberation.
22 October 1941, 48 innocents were executed, as hostages, in reprisals of the attack that had cost the life to the German lieutenant colonel HOLTZ.
